Monthly Dinners
*** NEW VIRTUAL MEETING IN OCTOBER ***
Dear Seattle Surgical Members,
After our first zoom meeting last month, I distributed a poll to the membership. There was consensus that they would like to have another zoom talk in June and to limit it to a single talk, and to not have a second, after dinner talk at the same time. With that in mind, we have decided to offer a second Zoom talk at 6 pm on June 29th. Dr. Val Simianu from Virginia Mason will be giving a 45 min talk entitled “Rectal Cancer in 2020”. Sue Lentz will be sending out a zoom invite to all members and with specific instructions about how to mute and unmute. We will plan on having at least 15 min for discussion and hopefully allow those asking questions to be viewed and heard by all. Once again, it will be a BYOB event. I hope to see everyone log on as it will be a fabulous talk.
Sincerely,
W. Scott Helton, MD

I am writing to invite everyone to attend the Seattle Surgical Societies’ first ever zoom meeting to be held on May 18th at 6 pm.
It is a real shame that we are not able to gather in person at this particular difficult time due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to raise a glass of your favorite beverage to toast and thank our invited speaker, Dr. Francis Riedo, the Medical Director of Infection Control and Prevention at EvergreenHealth. Dr. Riedo, a former Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the CDC, identified the first community acquired COVID-19 infected individuals in the USA and through his rapid communications with Seattle’s public health officials and colleagues at the CDC, is largely responsible for sounding the alarm that an epidemic was on hand in Seattle. His tireless and timely efforts in the first few days of confirming community spread of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients and recognizing long term care facilities as COVID-19 hotspots helped shape the Seattle areas’ rapid response to COVID-19 and stave off the surge that never happened.
As all of you know, COVID-19 has changed the world, the health care delivery system and radically affected all our practices and livelihoods. If you are interested in how COVID-19 started and what we can expect in the future, then you should tune into this zoom talk. The current plan is that Dr. Riedo will speak for about 45 min and we will save 15 minutes for questions. I strongly recommend everyone to block this time, pull up a chair—hopefully in the luxury of your home and perhaps with your family and enjoy your favorite libation and participate in this event.
Sue Lentz will be sending out an email invitation to all members of the SSS. You can listen to this talk via a desk top computer or your cell phone. All you need to do is click on the meeting invite and follow the directions. In preparation for this event, I encourage everyone to read the article written in the New Yorker this past week by Charles Duhigg in which Dr. Riedo was featured: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/05/04/seattles-leaders-let-scientists-take-the-lead-new-yorks-did-not

PERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING: THE SOLUTION TO CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS
Paul Lambros CEO, Plymouth Housing Paul Lambros is the Chief Executive Officer of Plymouth Housing, a Seattle based non-profit that develops and operates affordable housing coupled with supportive services for formerly homeless adults and seniors. Plymouth’s focus is on the “Housing First” model which seeks to lower all possible barriers to housing. Under “Housing First”, once people most in need are housed (and many have been homeless for years), they can begin to address whatever issues contributed to their homelessness, behavioral health disorders, and/or chemical dependency. Most Plymouth buildings receive Federal project-based Section 8 housing subsidy. Housing case management services are supported by federal McKinney grants, City and County programs as well as private donations. Plymouth celebrated the grand opening of its 15 th building - Bob and Marcia Almquist Place located in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District neighborhood in April 2020. Paul is on the board of the Downtown Seattle Association and has also served in a leadership role on a variety of committees and associations focusing on ways to address the need for affordable housing in Seattle. Paul is frequently asked to speak about nonprofit governance, fundraising, affordable housing development, and the Housing First model. |
